Toyen occupied herself with collages continuously for her whole life; often she used them in illustrations. Joining together objects, that do not have anything in common except using imagination, was the basic principle of the surrealistic work. In the end of 1960s, Toyen was intensively collecting and sorting newspaper and magazine clippings, her private archive counted thousands of items. In the 1970s she started to create small albums for her private use where she combined in the spirit of her imagination fragments of human bodies, animals, objects, landscapes, illustrations, manuals. For the last fifteen years of her life Toyen was choosing items from the envelopes sorted by themes and she was associatively arranging the clippings to small panels that resemble visual manuals. She did not project any new images but the clippings were additively laid one by one – themes close and distant, antagonistic and related, figural and material, coloured and black-and-white. Most often there are appearing female erotic and sex offering bodies – theorists attribute Toyen´s attitude to female body to her unfulfilled desire. The sexual orientation of Toyen, who used asexual pseudonym and stylized herself as a male, can be only speculated about. We do not know much about her private life, there are no testimonies or diaries. There is only one thing that is clear: The Art was synonymizing the Life itself for Toyen. Her relationships were the part of it.
On this album, Toyen combined predominantly coloured clippings full of romantic and erotic stories. She put here to relation poetic themes together with commercials, love with prostitution, vegetables with the cigarette.  She took an interest both in sadistic tools humiliating a woman (The theme of a woman becoming a table – bearing glass on her back – was used 30 years later, on a photograph of the Czech artist Veronika Bromová) and in armoury disturbing the peaceful landscapes. The images of historical buildings were chosen by Toyen by the chimneys resembling phalluses.
Supposedly there are some three hundred of these albums preserved. After the death of Toyen in 1980 they were stamped “Succession Toyen“ by the administrator of her estate, Vincent Wapler and temporarily deposited in Musée Georges Pompidou. When the estate after deceased Toyen was claimed by Czech heirs, these albums were in 1982 auctioned off in famous auction house in Paris, Drouot.
The albums coming from this private collection were exhibited on retrospective Toyen in the year 2000 in Dům u kamenného zvonu. On the Czech market, they appeared only recently.

Double-sided album is exclusively dedicated to women in the combination of coloured and black & white clippings. The woman is the object both of love and commercials, she is both the mother and a porn model. This might be the first time, when Toyen devoted her attention to the topic of motherhood and a child next to lesbian love. In the middle of the rear side of the collage there is a photograph of a harlequin book Le Petit Matin, which became in the year 1971 the template for a below average film. The main female character of the movie falls in love with her cousin and after the first love play she finds out that he is gay. It seems that Toyen evaluates her erotic life in a nostalgic way.

The front side of this album is Toyen´s the most female and moving confession: the set of female mouths of various colours she could not miss out and therefore they cover almost the whole space of the collage. The mouth was in many paintings the analogy of female sex organ and this slit in the appearance of a smile is present on number of paintings. Nevertheless, the mouths here represent the woman in whole and are amended by the most romantic scenes only. But, the rear side reminds us again of the fact that life is fight and relationships are affected by tragedies. The Art for Toyen meant poetry and poetry is based on no lying. Among many favourite contrast scenes there is, suddenly, a lonely little figure with an umbrella here.

The coloured lithography of the Little Angel creates complementary counterpart to a similar graphics of two girls. It probably came to being in the 1930s when Toyen was engaged in working on book a magazine illustrations the most. The religious theme is completely unique in the work of Toyen that is why this is an illustration of a specific template. The gothic window arch, of which every architectonic component is depicted in a detail, is not typical for Toyen either. Just as her faith, this building has a big rift also. The figure of the Little Angel does not have a realistic human appearance; its character is more the one of a puppet.
This lithograph appears in the auctions in the Czech Republic on rare occasions only. The last time it was offered in 2007.

The charming theme of portraits of two young girls with a plant ornament in the background probably came to being in the 1930s when Toyen was engaged in working on book a magazine illustrations the most. The combination of both floral and figurative themes in the illustrations, usual for Toyen, is present here also, this time with the addition of a distinctive colour accent.
This lithograph appears in the Czech Republic auctions under both designations. The last time it was offered in 2008. Nevertheless these were invariably versions without the signature.
The lithographs Trinity and Lovers have a similar character and colour combination.

Toyen and the poet and dramatist Radovan Ivsić knew each other in the surrealistic group since 1950s, but their cooperation started only ten years later. Toyen came to him in the year 1966 with fine ink drawings of which she spoke as the dream shards. In the end, a marvellous cassette-book with twelve illustrations came to existence. The cassette with an erotic game of a little ball and a hole was of the design by Toyen also. The drawings depict a dream penetration of human and animal body parts where the erotic tension is highly visible. It´s not clear there where the desire and passion ends and suffering starts. Petting is being transformed into torture. For this volume, the special ornamental decoration is typical – human body parts giving the impression of a tattoo (she followed up the idea of Štyrský about infants with tattoos depicting pornography motifs). Fragments of dream shards appear also in her older works – like Divider, Eclipse or the Stream in the Faraway. These graphics are emblematic of Toyen´s ability to combine human and animal elements, without human body ever appearing there. On this folio fingers seductively penetrate the hair, twisting it around themselves in the moment between the caress and violence.
Individual prints of the volume have been offered in the Czech auctions sporadically since the year 2002 – blak & white, or coloured also.

Toyen travelled to France for the first time with Jindřich Štyrský in the years 1924 and 1925. On these journeys the Sketchbook came to existence which is now in a private collection in Paris. The drawings were being created right in the middle of the travelling when the author was encountering various exotic circuses, celebrations, funfairs and carnivals. She was transforming her experience into the as if naive and childishly simple drawing, which was her way of reaction to the proletarian program of the Devětsil Group and its theory of changing the working day into a holiday. The atmosphere of Paris, bohemian life and encounters with multi-coloured population inspired Toyen to many erotic scenes embedded into exotic places, which culminated in the picture Paradise of the Black People presenting collective joyful copulation under the palm trees. The openness of the Author in the erotic scenes looks sensual and relaxed and is much more believable than in the erotic works of her male colleagues.
The main figure of the drawing is the black queen resting on her back who is being served by other blacks – they fan her or play the harp. More of them are achieving peaks of the palm trees in the background by climbing. This scene contains erotica in a hidden way only and is some kind of a silent initial to more orgies known from the Paradise of the Black People.
Given the confirmation of the authenticity of the drawing by František Dvořák, this drawing was acquired in the nineties from the private collection in Paris to the Czech auction market.
