The picture illustrates the adventure story, that takes place after the civil war.
The picture gives the impression of a scene, it is a play of light and shadows, which brings tension to the scene. The contrast between the totally realistic description of the details and the shadowed part brings dynamics.
Young pale beauty Terrill wearing a torn male dress looks with admiration at her brave rescuer, who, even though hurt himself, saved her. The pale body of the girl shines through the holes in the dress and the bosom visible through the torn shirt emphasizes the vulnerability of the girl.
Black cowboy Sambo observes the scene from afar.
